Domain Priorities
Command Structure and Contracts
- Use Commander.js (or the project's chosen parser) for ALL command routing and argument parsing; never implement custom arg parsing.
- Define commands with clear names, descriptions, and usage examples.
- Include
--version from package.json and comprehensive --help output for every command.
- Use proper exit codes: 0 = success, 1 = general error, 2 = usage/misuse.
- Preserve existing command contracts, help text, and exit-code behavior when modifying.
TTY Handling and Interactive Modes
- Use
process.stdin.isTTY and process.stdout.isTTY to detect interactive vs piped mode.
- Suppress spinners, colors, and interactive prompts when output is piped or running in CI.
- Check
chalk.level to detect color support and gracefully degrade.
- Use ora spinners for long-running async operations; always stop spinners on error paths.
- Support
--yes / --force to skip confirmation prompts in scripts.
- Confirm destructive operations (delete, overwrite, reset) with inquirer prompts in interactive mode.
Configuration and Environment
- Support multiple config formats (YAML, JSON, RC files) with cosmiconfig or equivalent.
- Parse YAML with
safeLoad only; never use load() on untrusted input.
- Validate configuration schemas with Zod, Joi, or custom validators.
- Define clear config precedence: defaults < config file < environment variables < CLI flags.
- Prefix environment variables with the app name (e.g.,
MYAPP_CONFIG_PATH).
- Validate environment variables at startup; provide clear error messages for missing required values.
- Store config in OS-appropriate locations (
os.homedir(), XDG Base Directory on Linux).
Logging and Output
- Use Pino for ALL application logging; never use
console.log/console.error in production code.
- Configure Pino with appropriate log levels; use pino-pretty in development, JSON output in production.
- Implement
--verbose (sets Pino level to debug) and --quiet (sets level to silent).
- Support
--json flag for machine-readable output.
- Ensure logs go to stderr; stdout is reserved for program output (composability).
- Use child loggers for different components:

Error Handling
- Handle SIGINT/SIGTERM gracefully with cleanup operations (temp files, connections).
- Handle
uncaughtException and unhandledRejection to prevent crashes without useful output.

- Wrap file system operations and child process spawning in try-catch with actionable error messages.

Security
- Never use
exec/execSync with string interpolation; use execFile/execFileSync with argument arrays.
- Use execa or cross-spawn for cross-platform command execution.
- Sanitize user input before using in shell commands or file paths; validate against path traversal (
../../etc/passwd).
- Never hardcode secrets; never print passwords or sensitive data in logs or output.
- Use
safeLoad for YAML; never use eval() or new Function() with user input.
Cross-Platform Compatibility
- Use
path.join() and path.resolve() for all path handling; never hardcode / separators.
- Use
os.tmpdir() instead of /tmp; use os.EOL where line endings matter.
- Use
os.homedir() instead of assuming HOME env var (Windows uses USERPROFILE).
- Use
fs.rm with { recursive: true } instead of shell rm -rf.
- Be aware that SIGUSR1/SIGUSR2 are not available on Windows.
Input Validation
- Validate all file paths and check existence before operations.
- Validate numeric inputs (guard against NaN, Infinity, negative where inappropriate).
- Validate string inputs (empty strings, overly long strings).
- Validate file uploads/reads for type and size before processing.
TypeScript
- Enable
strict: true in tsconfig.json; use ESM ("type": "module") and NodeNext module resolution.
- No
any type; use unknown and narrow with type guards.
- Define interfaces for all option objects (
GlobalOptions, CommandOptions).
- Explicit return types on ALL exported functions.
Testing
- Write comprehensive tests for all commands using Jest or Vitest.
- Mock
stdin/stdout/stderr with jest.spyOn(); test both interactive and non-interactive modes.
- Test error scenarios and edge cases (missing files, invalid input, permission errors).
- Test exit codes and
--help output after Commander.js changes.
- Run the relevant test file after any CLI code change.
Packaging and Distribution
- Configure
package.json with bin field, engines, files, and shebang (#!/usr/bin/env node).
- Lazy load heavy dependencies to minimize startup time.
- Read version from package.json; never hardcode version strings.
Monorepo Awareness
- Before using pnpm/npm filters, read
package.json to verify the exact name field (folder name does not equal package name).
- When building CLI tools that depend on workspace packages, verify dependencies are built first.
- Run
pnpm build or npm run build early when modifying TypeScript to catch type errors before extensive changes.
