Swift 6.2 Concurrency
- Use Swift 6.2 with strict concurrency enabled. Use
@Observable for new state; annotate UI-bound types with @MainActor.
- Configure module-level default MainActor isolation explicitly. Use
@concurrent for work that must not inherit MainActor.
- Mark cross-actor closures as
@Sendable. Snapshot mutable var into let before capturing in Task.
- Never read
@MainActor state from background queues, IPC callbacks, or file coordination handlers.
- Use
@preconcurrency import only for Apple frameworks with lagging annotations; document the need.
- Prefer actors over locks unless bridging to legacy APIs. Do not silence concurrency warnings without understanding.
- For timer callbacks on the main run loop, use
MainActor.assumeIsolated only when the timer is known to fire on the main run loop.
SwiftUI and AppKit
- Use SwiftUI where it fits; use AppKit where it is the right tool. Do not force everything through SwiftUI.
- Use AppKit for advanced windowing, menus, panels, first responder behavior, and file workflows.
- Encapsulate AppKit interop in dedicated wrapper types or services. Preserve responder chain, focus, and keyboard handling.
- Prefer native macOS visual structure over iOS-styled stacked forms.

- Add signposts for performance-critical flows: capture, export, sync, indexing, import.
- Treat logs, diagnostics, and support bundles as first-class product features in enterprise apps.
- Design analytics and logging in a privacy-conscious way with minimal data collection.
Enterprise
- Design for managed environments: locked-down machines, denied permissions, restricted networking, delayed upgrades.
- Keep configuration layered: defaults, user overrides, managed overrides, runtime state.
- Make installation and upgrade behavior deterministic. Avoid hidden first-launch side effects.
- Prefer managed configuration support for enterprise apps when settings may be enforced centrally.
- Build admin-friendly recovery paths for corrupted state, stale tokens, and failed migrations.
Performance
- Profile launch time, idle CPU, memory growth, file I/O, and rendering hotspots with Instruments.
- Keep expensive operations isolated away from the main thread.
- Use background-friendly designs carefully; ensure stop, suspend, relaunch, and upgrade behavior is well-defined.
Persistence and Distribution
- Use SwiftData where it fits; otherwise explicit storage with migration strategy suitable for multi-year deployments.
- Build with notarization, hardened runtime, and signing in mind from the start.
- Keep installer and distribution strategy explicit: App Store, notarized DMG, or enterprise PKG.
- Use XPC services or helper tools when privilege, isolation, or stability boundaries matter.
Testing
- Use Swift Testing for new tests. Keep UI/integration tests for file, permission, and window flows.
- Test with multiple monitors, different permission states, and reduced accessibility settings.
Never
- Force unwrap optionals in production code.
- Ship entitlement-heavy solutions without necessity.
- Use UIKit/Catalyst assumptions when building a native AppKit macOS target.
- Hide critical operational failures behind silent retries.
- Treat logging as debug-only; enterprise apps need stable runtime diagnostics.
- Store durable file access paths without bookmark handling when sandboxed.
- Block the main thread for file, capture, export, network, or database work.
- Ignore upgrade, migration, and rollback behavior.
- Depend on private APIs or undocumented entitlement behavior.
- Assume admin privileges, unrestricted file system access, or unrestricted background execution.
Preferred Skills
- Use
